Re: Past friends of the internet

I have met plenty of people on RuneScape and Discord that just stopped logging on one day. There something quite sad about seeing an empty friend list. This especially sad in RuneScape as after a certain period of time, their name are unbound to their account (so other players may claim their name),...

Re: Streaming or downloading?

ooooh i used to do this! the DAC on that first gen DS didn't have the best bit depth, but there's something about that fuzz that appears around quiet sounds that is just soo comfortable. eitherway, that was one of my better portable players i must say, as iirc you could browse images and maybe vide...

Re: Streaming or downloading?

I tend to listen to my music on my Nintendo DS using a homebrew application called Moonshell2.

That being said, I still have a mirror of all my downloaded music on my PC and external HDDs.

Re: lost media

Its interesting how the modern definition of lost media is "media which isn't readily available online". I know you have said other things after this that contextualize it a bit more, buuuuuuuuut this alone raises a valid discussion about copyright / IP laws and data preservation. I think...

Re: Streaming or downloading?

Neither. I like to own things physically, I get movies on VHS, Laserdisc and Blu-Ray, games on disc/cart and albums on CD, Vinyl and Cassette. If there's a song I like that I can only download or stream, I record onto cassette. :P Damn, that's some dedication! Congrats on living by your values Cobr...

Re: Older versions of Linux distros or newer versions of Linux distros?

I am still very new to Linux world, but I have so far preffered my time with older and "retro themed" distro. Modern Linux distro are generally pretty souless and are a memory hog. That being aid, I will give Linux Mint an honourable mention for letting me revert back to an UI that actuall...

Re: Streaming or downloading?

when people talk about "streaming" like this, is it from those weird shady 123movies dot whatnot, or is there some serene option i'm missing? i get heavy "i'm to old for this shit"-feelings with how these things like kisscartoon etc would just blast you with weird ads, javascrip...

Re: What issues are likely to arise with the focus on software preservation over hardware preservation?

I don't actually know if there will be a demand for x86 emulation. Cloud computing and more specifically WebApps gives a lot of flexibility in this space. I can foresee that a lot of software in the future will be running in a browser or some kind of WebApp version. It will be interesting none the ...

Re: Discord is overwhelming.

Yeah, big Discord server are definitively quite something. I personally think Discord is best used with small and non-public servers - like small friends groups. I also pretty much mute anything aside for two low-activity servers (since I mod them). My opinion on this is probably biased sinced I use...

If you played RuneScape in 2001-2012, you might have lost media

Hi all, If you're not aware, RuneScape was an online java game created in 2001. The game was being continually updated with over 400 different versions existing, but the developers didn't implement any full version control until 2012 (aside from a single tape backup they found of 2007). Therefore we...

Re: lost media

It is nice that media preservation is starting to get more attention. More eyes means more chances of finding something. As my signature indicates, I am a RuneScape Archivist. We seek to find old versions of RuneScape - something people might have on their old computers without realizing it. So natu...

Re: What issues are likely to arise with the focus on software preservation over hardware preservation?

Yeah, the change of hardware architecture is certainly going to cause some issues in the future. I am unusure how realistic this is, but I would think that if there is sufficient demand, 3rd party compagnies might specialize in the making of old computers architecture for businesses. That being said...

I have three email addresses:

-A "comfy" email address that I use for things like the Yesterweb.

Re: How did you get into web design?

When I was young, I really was into making WordPress websites. While it was more limited than a pure HTML website, you coul still make a lot of customizations. This (alongside other factors) eventually led me to becoming a professional graphic designer wich then led me into "real" web desi...

Re: Losing technology to technology

Retro computer stuff is really hard to find in my area. That's a shame as I would like to thinker with older hardware, but sadly this appear to not be an option. At this point my only hope are in flea markets. Yeah, I used to encourage people to play on real hardware whenever they can, but given the...

I can't help but feel people are farther away on the Internet now than they've been before. Not in the physical sense, but you get a lot of drive-by engagements and an oppressive sense of loneliness. It's strange because the web has never been more "social", there are comment fields and l...

The (perceived?) degradation of audio quality

Disclaimer: I have a disorder that make me hear more sound/decibels than I should. This might have an affect on what I am about to describe, so bear that in mind. I am experiencing something that I have never seen anyone talk about. In recent year I started to realize that the sound quality of some...
