Webrings!

Post by littlebeggar »

A discussion on the yesterweb discord (nooo don't go there, everyone wants to use the forum more and have slower discussions nooo) popped up about wanting more topic-centric webrings.

Have one? Found one someone else made? Promote it here!
Want one to gather people interested in a specific topic? Don't know how to make it yourself? Want to learn how? It's sooo much easier to start knowing you'll have 5 interested members ready to join and be hyped about it.

What do you like about webrings? What sucked? What makes a cute widget? Webring talk! webring talk!

ayy that was me! i would totally love more topic and interest-specific webrings - they're such a good way of discovering other cool sites!

i'm working on a dragon webring at the moment, for anyone who features dragons on their website or just loves dragons! this is what the widget looks like so far:

i'm hoping to have it ready to go in the next couple days or so. i'll update when that happens!

love the concept of these so much, soo glad theyre making a comeback.

i can't join a bunch since they require embedding javascript/iframes etc which i will not do on principle. the hotline webring has a smart scheme where it uses the links themselves and the fact that someone clicked them to insert you in the ring, and forward users to the right place. that's a nice approach IMO.

i would set something up but idk what topic :p and im not much good at organizing

I had my “gotta catch ‘em all” phase regarding webrings: as you can see by going to my website, I’m into quite a few.
I started two webrings using Yesterweb’s NO-JS stack:
  • the Ediemmari Webring, which is more of a joke within friends;
  • the Italian webring, which is actually a great idea by Tarocchilla, since the the “generic Italian” webrings are all dead (to my knowledge).
Nam Sibyllam quidem Cumis ego ipse oculis meis
vidi in ampulla pendere, et cum illi pueri dicerent:
Σίβυλλα τί θέλεις; respondebat illa: ἀποθανεῖν θέλω.

I love this?? I'm tbh desirous of more topic-centric webrings. I've been just looking at EVERY site on some of the big ones but a lot are just not to my interest (aesthetically or content wise or both) but I like them cos they in a basic way kind of sort for "here is a site the creator considers medium-finished and you probably haven't seen before"

but i want to find more like, craft centric sites or even like, personal curated recs of what someone considers really good sites (for whatever quality they're looking at) (yes this is not a webring but "most visited" on neocities just keeps showing me the same top contenders...)

What do people think about widget placement? For the two i'm in, i put them on the index page in order to, like, enter the whole thing in the webring. I also prefer it to be kind of visible to encourage exploring.

But for some, that might be strange? Like, say a fursona ring if there's such a thing, that'd be better placed on the page for my fursona. Maybe....

I've never had one before so it's kinda new for me. I put it in the footer on index.html for now, just as you pointed out I want people to be encouraged to explore. I'll also put it in my upcoming link section I think.

I definitely think webrings fit on the index most, just so that if you wanna continue going down the webring trail, you don't have to hunt to find it.

There is a furryring I'm in, by the way, though it doesn't have many members -- I am curious if there are any larger furry webrings out there I don't know about

Yeah, you're right! I agree much with the "have it findable" sentiment. I was thinking about, if i placed it in some off corner, to enter "just" that off corner in the ring. But now i do remember landing on some non-index page while browsing a ring and being mostly confused about it... hehe. So i shall not.

I recently came across Ray Thomas (brisray) who has been doing, and sharing, some absolutely incredible work regarding webrings. From their history to the underlying technology, I was quite impressed and I encourage any of you interested in this topic to check it out.

As an artist I think more people should know about the Webcomic webring, 'cause folks on there have a lot of fun and creative stuff, if comics are your thing.

Other than that, I think all the others I'm in are pretty well-known...

---
(on another note, since I don't want to, like, make a separate thread about it in case I missed something: does anyone else see the Yesterweb's webring widget breaking on all sites or is it something on my end?)
