What email providor do you use?

Post by irkeneon »

My system's been thinking of moving some of our accounts off of Gmail, but we don't know of any alternatives really outside of Yahoo (which we are also not using lol), so people of yesterweb what email providers do you personal use or would recommend?

We're using fastmail.
It's pretty cheap at 50 bucks a year for an account where you can have your own domain. Or 30 a year without using a custom domain.

If you can set it up I would defo recommend using your own domain, as that gives you the freedom of switching to another provider at any point.

If you're looking for something free, I can on the other hand recommend the free tier of ProtonMail. They're not perfect but a big step up from Google in terms of privacy.

I use Disroot. It's a simple server run by a couple of people. It's political in nature (It's left-winged), but it's simple, and doesn't collect any data or any of that crap. You need to get approved to get an account but it's pretty good once you get one.

i use Gmail for my college and job searching but for casual usage i use tutanota. they give 1 GB when making a free account and offers a really cheap yearly subscription if you want more space for you account. if you make a free account you can only make however but i don't mind it as much. https://tutanota.com/

I mainly use gmail since I've had accounts there for years, but am getting a protonmail address soon for work. According to the guy I work with (who's pretty paranoid about security) it's supposed to be pretty good - so I'd recommend that if you wanted to switch.

PurelyMail. I've also heard mailbox.org and Posteo (already mentioned on this thread) are similar.

i use Riseup, which is similar to Disroot (mentioned earlier). it's invite-only but if you can get in it's pretty good!!

I've used hotmail for an eternity. A couple years ago, I started self-hosting, which sounds daunting but is actually pretty easy if you have sysadmin chops.

I followed this guide to set it up on OpenBSD (an excellent server OS, by the way), and it's been smooth sailing since then. I use this self-hosted mail for all my interactions with open source communities such as authoring git commits, talking on mailing lists, etc. All my "IRL" stuff stays on the hotmail as I can't be bothered to move everything.

Man, thank you so much for sharing PurelyMail. I was looking for a new provider and this one is just perfect for my needs. Cheap. Just mail. I can use my custom domains! :D I had been looking for something *exactly* like this, yay!

Related question that I don't think warrants its own thread - what do you guys use as a client? Until now I've basically only had gmail emails so I used the webclient there :')
RN I've tried Thunderbird which I know is the "best", but it's a bit cluttered for me (what's up with all those tabs??), and I've tried Clawmail - I like the simple UI, but I think I'm not enough of a geek for that one.

The client I use is Claws Mail so you've pre-emptively indicated my answer won't help you 😅 (unless Clawmail is a separate client unrelated to Claws Mail :p )

edit: which operating system are you using Ray? that probably affects which clients are available.

I'm using the paid tier of Protonmail and I'm a huge fan. Definitely worth it if you can; I migrated pretty much everything from my Gmail and Outlook accounts to Protonmail last year and haven't regretted it one bit.

For anything related to me IRL (job searching, college, etc) and for accounts i made a long time ago i use gmail, for things that aren't as personal as that (such as social media sites, utilities, etc), i use Fedora.email

HIGHLY recommend Riseup. I've had an account for about three years now, you can create aliases for various services you use and delete the aliases if it starts attracting spam. Speaking of spam, you can adjust the threshold which stuff is considered spam and honestly by default it's really good at picking up which is spam and which isn't. It is invite only though.

Client-wise I use Thunderbird...It kinda just works for me..sometimes it is clunky. I've never had the urge to find another email client though. Riseup does have a webmail that's powered by Roundcube if you're into that.

For real life stuff I scatter stuff around with gmail, att, and recently trying to get a Bellsouth.net email...or at least recover my old one...that at&t corrupted when they transitioned to Yahoo's servers years back. Mostly a "just to have" kinda thing :P

Whoops, slip of the keyboard, that's the one! I couldn't for the life of me get it to send emails, even though I configured it just like each other client I tried, following Purelymail's instructions

I'm on Windows! I might go back and try to revisit Claws Mail and try to get it to work some other time, but if you have other suggestions, those are well appreciated as well! <3

hmm odd; I'm able to send mail just fine with PurelyMail+Claws. Let me know if you want to compare SMTP configurations to see if we can find the problem I guess?

I do not know any other clients on Windows but sharing your OS is indeed good when requesting software recommendations
