Domain Name Registrars - how to choose them?

Post by Ray »

Hiya! I've got a couple domains to my name, and so far have always used Namecheap.
I also realize I haven't got the slightest idea of what I should look for in a registrar, what are some green vs red flags, what can I risk by buying from "worse" registrars, and if there's a list of well-known "trusted" ones, or some resource to compare prices on several different registrars.
Thanks! :D

while i can't really offer the suggestions you need since i don't have any experience with any other registrars, i can say that in my short time using porkbun i've really liked it! i can't really say what it does or doesn't do compared to namecheap because i'm so new to all of this - i mostly just chose it for the price, so i guess i'm also interested in learning what i might be missing out on :surprise:

as for comparisons, i used domcomp! it seems to be pretty comprehensive! :D

i can't give any registrar recommendations - i also use namecheap - but personally what i look for is price & what their support is like! for me, namecheap's support is great! i use them as my webhost also with no issues, and their price for that is cheaper than other hosts with similar features.

Back when I was setting up my site, I did a little research on this. My understanding is that in terms of top-level domains, ".com" is still king, and that (almost all) registrars sell it. As long as what one is looking for is relatively average, just go with the recommendations from people on here, reddit, Hacker News, etc.

Once you're willing to start getting a little weird, interesting options pop-up. Are you going to do some crazy stuff with your site and want some anonymity? Njalla will buy (and OWN) the domain on your behalf via a Monero payment. Pretty wild, I think.

Are you willing to drop the ".com" for something more quirky? There's this HN thread I read on "What Is The Most Free TLD?". It seems the original blog post was pretty crap, but the discussion was interesting and introduced me to country-managed registrars like ISNIC (it's both private AND public).

In terms of my personal life, I also vouch for Namecheap. I've used it for years and have yet to encounter problems.

EDIT: Forgot to talk about how ISNIC banned KiwiFarms during the whole fiasco last year, so that blog post saying the TLD is a "most free" one is extra funny now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
