before musk bought it a rich guy ran the website, after musk bought it a rich guy ran the website
i dont get why i should care. he promised more freedom in what you can say, so far i dont know if that really happened, the site still feels oppressive to be on. it did come out after he bought it how twitter works with the US government to sway elections and control public perceptions, ban certain opinions etc etc, called the twitter files, so maybe its all worth it for a peek into how the us government controls people.

It helps to put things in context. For the majority of people, Musk is not just a "rich guy" like any other. He does a lot of work to mantain a certain image of himself, he's somewhat of a celebrity. He has a huge cult following of people who think he's the smartest cookie on the planet, and a perhaps same sized sector of avid detractors that would ban him maybe not only from twitter but from life, if possible. You don't get to polarize people that much without really trying to cast attention to yourself, by saying or doing outlandish things. Most of us, I think, have no idea about like who the CEO of idk Nestlé or Unilever is, even though they're swimming in cash earned via child slavery all the same.

There's a reason that "N" word usage increased by 500% right after Musk's acquisition. When he speaks of "freedom of speech", you need to understand that it's a phrase that has two meanings, one of these two hidden, and understandable only by those "reading through the lines". "Freedom of speech" has been widely used as far-right dogwhistle for "freedom of using hateful language".

It's a dogwhistle that has been understood loud and clear by the alt-right, because the alt-right already had good reason to think Musk was on their side. Other dogwhistles he used in the past include "Pepe the frog" (and the associated "kek" laugh, his whole making fun of pronouns (one, two, the progressive professors tweet, a subtle-but-not-too-subtle wink to the "white replacement theory" - I could cite more, but you get the picture (also with tweets being deleted and forgotten, it's genuinely harder to dig up the crazy stuff he was saying before all this attention was on him).

The thing about dogwhistles is - they appear innocuous to the majority of the population. "It's only a meme! It was a joke! It's just a graph!" - sure, but the audience that those dogwhistles are targeted to, perk their ears up and listen. Yes Elon Musk citing "88 million years" is just a number and a coincidence. Except for the ones that know what it means and think "surely not... but... maybe he's talking to us?". And they keep listening. And then there's a kek, and a meme, and all these little things pile up, until the literal white supremacists and neonazis know that he's a cool guy that's kind of on their side, while the public is none the wiser.

So we shouldn't be surprised when he gives nazis a platform and doesn't remove antisemitic content. These people are now glad to use twitter, because they know its boss is on their side.

And that is NOT freedom of speech. Giving voice to an hate group means putting the people they target in danger. But being black, or jewish, or trans is just something you are. Being in a hate group is a conscious choice one makes, to actively promote violence against a group of people like those.

The reason people are so upset about Musk being head of twitter is not that he's just some guy - because most rich guys are driven by profit and profit alone, while Musk's acquisition has been undeniably political in nature. A rich investor following profit would not risk alienating advertisers by letting hate speech run rampant on their platform - because that's the kind of stuff that makes headlines, and scares advertisers away.

But also, we the public tend to have a scarce attention span for things like this. Things are getting calmer again, in another kind of normalcy. It's not the new big thing anymore, you know? We're probably gonna forget about this, advertisers will slowly come back once the eye of the public is not on "wait is Musk alt-right??" anymore, twitter is gonna resume business as usual - just a little more buggy and less good on performance as before. Maybe a little less universally loved.
Yet I hope we don't ignore how even small things like these are part of an unsettling quantity of data showing how far-right ideology is on the rise worldwide, and is getting bolder than ever in its manifestations. Testing the waters to see how much they can get away with. And we've seen that so far, it already is a whole lot more than it should be acceptable.

Free access to the Twitter API ends tomorrow unless your bot provides "good content", whatever THAT means for Musk. It's most likely gonna obliterate services that aren't quite bots but use the Twitter API (like TumblThree, an archival tool I use) too.

I wanna say he won't actually do this but I think everything is on the table right now lmao. Why anyone would think this was a good idea at all, is totally beyond me.

If this does happen, this will 100% be a nail in the coffin. I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay for this, not to mention the people who simply wouldn't be able to afford it.
My final message. Change da world. Goodbye.
to the people who see this in the future on the internet archive or whatever, helo :] is saying rawr XD hip in the future???

Agreed. Even MySpace, LiveJournal, Yahoo, Tumblr and others are still around, even though their choices cost them their high-profile positionings and "no one" uses them anymore. (Geocities is sadly not among those, but I think Neocities avenged that beautifully.)

The further Twitter crumbles, the more accessible it will be to whatever individual or company wants to buy it and try to make it better. It may never again be one of the "main" platforms (I might actually lament this since it had unique strengths and fun aspects), but it should always be a name. And "tweet" will always be its own sense of the word.

Ok the only people left in Twitter are people running for political office. Myspace that's getting a retro look on Space Hey and Friend Project. YouTube that's evolved to Cable TV at this point. Tumblr it's fighting against Instagram and Mastodon for Ex Twitter users.

Ok Elon you can use Twitter as your personal rant blog about how Newspapers are removing Dilbert after Scott Adams got called out for his rants.

. Feb 26 (Reuters) - Billionaire Elon Musk on Sunday accused the media of being racist against whites and Asians after U.S. newspapers dropped a white comic strip author who made derogatory comments about Black Americans.

The Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and USA Today were among newspapers that canceled the cartoon "Dilbert" after its creator Scott Adams said Black Americans were a hate group and posted racist comments on his YouTube channel on Wednesday.

In replies to tweets about the controversy, the Tesla (TSLA.O) and Twitter chief executive said the media had long been racist against non-white people but are now "racist against whites & Asians."

Twitter has ruined Tweetdeck and basically removed the only purpose it had, which is to use multiple account simultaneously. I've been using Tweetdeck extensively to promote my games, and now my workflow is in complete tatters!

Thanks Elon Musk!

I am so glad I deleted mine before all this happened. I do feel bad for some of my friends who're artists and they have chosen to stay on Twitter because that's their main source of commissions (but not their main income). I understand their choice, though personally I would drop the platform.

Its so much that we are buried with politicians ranting on Twitter all so they can get re-elected. Or in Elon Musk's case hes doing that to get the VC's to dump investment money for Twitter.

It's basically the dysfunction is everywhere for Twitter.

this is what i see in its future, too. i think, like any other fading social media platform, it's going to have a long, drawn-out, resonant and stinky fart of a demise. which is honestly more depressing to watch than if it just imploded all at once tbh!

The worse thing I'd imagine happening to Twitter would be if Elon sells it to some random corporation. (probably Verizon)

Twitter just feels too big for me to imagine Elon taking it down with him. I'm betting on a Myspace-eseque death or a Tumblr apocalypse type situation. A big sudden shut down isn't gonna happen like people seem to be expecting. People will move to a different websites, though I'm not sure which one.
