Professor Layton and the Lost Future

When the first Layton game came out for the Nintendo DS in 2008 I immediately bought it, played it and loved it. I bought the next one as well, but then I was kind of fed up. I felt done with the whole format. It wasn't until my birthday 2012 that my girlfriend got me Miracle Mask on 3DS that I was ready for another adventure with Layton. Since then I didn't really keep tabs on what was happening with the series. I had NO idea there was an original trilogy and then a prequal trilogy (which Miracle Mask is a part of). It bugged me to no end that I didn't even have the complete original trilogy, so I just had to change that. And here we are. :)

Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. 10/10

last cartridge I bought was Pokemon Moon. Worst video game experience I've had. Don't play it.

I usually just pirate all the games I want to play these days.

Months ago I got really bored and bought a japanese boxset of both Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. I don't understand JPN at all, but I know the games like the back of my hand, so I'm managing :p
They also came with Pokewalkers, and I linked them to my ENG copy so they'd be in ENG.
I'm very lucky that new pkmn games always release near my birthday, so I never have to buy them myself :D

I bought a whole Commodore Amiga 1200!

It came with a few games but I've mostly been playing this fantastic German RPG called Ambermoon. It just has the most incredible vibes, it combines everything I love about late 80s/early 90s JRPGs with everything I love about that same era's CRPGs. The Amiga didn't come with Ambermoon, though, it was released as freeware a few years back.

The last game I bought on its own, rather than coming with a computer, was proooobably Sonic Frontiers when that dropped in November. I enjoyed my time with it a lot! The over-the-top spectacle and maudlin tone were super appealing to me and the core gameplay loop tickled my brain just right.

I just bought Pathologic 2 at an 80% discount! I played through the first one with a lot of help from hbomberguy and faqs, barely made it (I even cheated once) and hated almost everything about it so naturally I have to play this one as well.

----- Aaand a response post, I want to avoid doing a double post -----

I remember when Ambermoon became freeware (abandonware?), I downloaded the DOS version! :D I haven't played it yet but I bet I'll love it! It's one of those games that really need the player to read the manual, right? I remember the download came with it as to not get immediately stuck, hehe! (Edit: I'm a complete buffoon, the game I'm thinking of is the prequal, Amberstar, which got a DOS version.)

It's always fun to get a new system, are you knowledgeable on Amigas? I've got an Amiga 500 but nowhere to set it up properly so I've never really started using it... The same goes for my C64. And I must admit I have very limited knowledge about both of them, I was mainly a console fella growing up.

Splatoon 3!! I love the Nintendo switch a lot, it's my first "proper" console other than the DS.

I don't know if it was a good deal, lots of people are criticizing Nintendo for how they're dealing with it - and I do think they're right - but I'm a casual player so I don't notice as much. It has my favourite game mode always available though, and has added some QOL features I get a lot of help from, and I have spent like 400 hours on the 2 so it felt fair to give the 3 a shot! I'm enjoying it, personally!

Does anyone else here play Splatoon? I'd be down to hopping back on the 2 for some friendly matches too! :D

i actually bought a copy of Deep Rock Galactic for a friend of mine so we could play together! highly highly HIGHLY recommend, it's a blast (hehe. mining pun) to play with friends and it's an excellently designed multiplayer experience overall. it's not half bad playing solo mode, either!
there's a lot of really cute touches, like how they give the machines different nicknames ("molly", "doretta", and "bosco" being a few) and how you can spend time screwing around in the lobby kicking barrels 'n' stuff. also, you can SERIOUSLY tell that this game was made by people who loved dwarf fortress, which is always a plus in my book.

Haha, they're easy to mix up! I've only played a bit of Amberstar but it definitely can't hurt to read the manual. I've found both games to be very intuitive for CRPGs of their vintage, though. I've had to use the included rune translation chart (there's an in-game item to get past that I think, but I kind of love deciphering the runes with it) and look up one or two spells or items but it's nothing that you wouldn't also deal with in most console RPGs of the era like Phantasy Star or whathaveyou.

For the most part the interface is easy to navigate and the game is good about giving you the information you need to progress in the game itself. It's not quite like the older Ultimas or Wasteland where the game sometimes refers you to the manual for vital context. I've found the narrative elements of Ambermoon surprisingly compelling, too. It kind of feels like a fun fantasy TTRPG campaign with a compelling GM.
It's always fun to get a new system, are you knowledgeable on Amigas? I've got an Amiga 500 but nowhere to set it up properly so I've never really started using it... The same goes for my C64. I'm fairly knowledgeable but no expert! This is my first time actually owning one, though I've wanted one for basically my entire life and have emulated before :P It can be a fairly console-like experience, especially if you haven't installed a hard drive. Insert a game, turn the unit on and it just boots. There are even a lot of games that require a joystick or controller to play.

It's nice to have a hard drive for some later releases though. Ambermoon comes on ten disks! Disk swapping would get very tedious very quickly lmao

YOOOO thats the game im planning on getting next. I do want to finish HK's hardest platforming challenge first (which is easier than a lot of celeste's harder levels, so the internet has said).I'm a bit worried about eight directional dashing on keyboard, but some googling tells me i shooould be fine. just needs practice, just like hollow knight.

you might like hollow knight too :3 It's not a very parkour focused game, mostly exploration and combat (it's sort of a metroidavania soulslike hybrid?) but the movement is sooo highly praised.

I bought Gris a few days ago and I’ve already finished it as it takes just a few hours to complete.
Gris is an emotional and immersive puzzle-platforming game that focuses on the journey of a young girl who is on a journey of self-discovery and healing after a period of emotional distress. Players are tasked with solving puzzles and exploring the world in order to progress the story. The game's art style is stunning, and its soundtrack is wonderfully peaceful. All in all, it's a beautiful and thoughtful game that I highly recommend.

not the latest one i bought but i've been playing ULTRAKILL a lot the past week and a half...it rules; if you like DOOM and devil may cry, this should be right up your ally. the music is really good too. fun stuff, very satisfying to play. the amount of assist controls are really nice too if, like me, you like the genre but suck at actually playing it.

i think the last game i actually bought was SOMA, which i also really enjoyed. recommend picking it up if you like sci-fi and the ship of theseus and atmospheric horror. i played it on safe mode instead of normal, and tbh i think the game is more interesting as a sort of walking simulator since it does so well with existential and atmospheric horror already.

yukari mentioned lobcorp and ruina...i've heard a lot about those games and they seem pretty interesting. i want to experience them at some point, but i barely have the attention span for management games or games over like 50 hours, which ruina and lobcorp both are. might need to watch some twitch streamer who's good at the game go through them instead haha

The latest ones I bought were from the steam sale, when I bought hypnospace outlaw, yakuza 0, dragon age 2, fallout new vegas, civ 6, planet zoo, and dr. daisy: pet vet (which was what sparked my buying, as I was looking for a copy of it since it was something I played when I was a kid). Good purchases overall I think (particularly for roughly $55 in total), though I haven't played any of them yet save for Planet Zoo (which has been pretty good so far, but I only played a little bit) and Dr. Daisy: Pet Vet (which didn't even work and kept crashing so... good thing I paid like $2 for it I guess  ).

Hilariously what I ended up playing over winter break (when I bought these) instead of my lovely purchases was Crusader Kings 3, a game which I pirated that day because I was curious and it wasn't on sale xP at least it'll be worth it when I finally do get around to playing my games lol

Prolly Bonelab.
I haven't really been buying games lately cuz I want to work with the library I already got. There are a few I wanna buy but they're either rarely on sale or not out yet.

I'm defo enjoying Bonelab so far. Been hyped for it ever since I played Boneworks.
I have to play it in small steps tho cuz it can be exhausting or make me dizzy. Very fun tho! It's on my recommended list for people who got VR and the necessary resistance to play it without being sick the entire day.

Newest non VR game is prolly Cult of the Lamb! I really enjoyed that one! Enough to even write a whole blog post about it!
https://eventide.space/blog/lamb.html

We've been lately busy with Beat Saber but that was like our first purchase in vr so wouldn't call that new.

I have Splatoon 2 and 3! They're super fun, even though I'm not that good haha. My favorite game mode is probably the turf war one (basic, I know). I keep missing events in Splatoon 3 because of being busy with life stuff, though. ^^;

(I'd add you, but I'm afraid I don't have time to play it at the moment :">)

Technically, the last video game I bought would be Wandersong, but I haven't started yet. Before that, I bought and played Chicory: A Colorful Tale. It's sooo good... the mechanics, the message, the story, everything! I especially recommend it to artists and creative people in general. Coloring areas in the game can be such a stress reliever :3

Just got Persona 5 Royal and Rune Factory 4 on Switch for Christmas. The former was PlayStation exclusive for the longest time, and I play most of my games on Switch nowadays since my desktop runs Linux and Proton can be iffy still. RF4 is a 3DS remake on switch, I got it because people said it was better than RF5.

Both work great on the Switch's portable mode since they're day-based. I just play a few days of each every day before I go to bed.

This is actually a tough question for me because a majority of games I own are gifts or something I got in exchange for art! Or I got them for free
With my own money though? I pre-ordered Splatoon 3 as soon as those opened and got it launch morning. I haven't played it in a hot minute because I've been trying to play other games, but I adore it to bits. Someone mentioned before that it has issues and I agree, but I've been playing Splatoon since 2015 and despite its problems I can't see myself going back lol. I don't play for as long as I used to though so I don't get as many problems except during Splatfests sometimes, but I've also been here for so long the network issues are the norm to me. My dock also happens to be maybe less than a foot away from my router too and I intend on getting ethernet for it eventually.

Games I got as a gift though? I got Pokémon Scarlet for christmas and I've been playing it on and off since. It's def my new favourite Pokémon game under SuMo. It's such a bittersweet experience, with all its bugs and obvious crunch time and all - but there's still so much obvious love and care put into it I couldn't help but get attached. It's very different from other games in the series so it's not everyone's thing but it's a breath of fresh air imo. Also, I have a hard time getting through Pokémon games, so being able to play with my friends even if we were just standing next to each other in-game helped me have a lot more fun with it.
If you're interested in it I do recommend getting it secondhand though. If it weren't for the buggy unfinished state it obviously is in I would actually say it's worth the price, but that's obviously not the case, and part of why I asked for it as a gift because I wasn't going to save my money up for that haha. It's a good experience though imo.

I got a few other games for christmas too...I gotta...Get to them still... Lol.... ^^;

i've known about it since before it came out, back when they collabed with Blaseball, but almost two years later i finally picked up An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs! it seems to be a silly little exploration game, and based on the trailer i know i'm gonna love the sense of humor in it so i'm super excited to finally play it! :D

The latest video game I got was Miitopia and the Link's Awakening remake. Both as gifts. The last game I bought was Rain World because I like games that don't last too long that I can pick up and put down without feeling like they're gaming epics. I'm also in a stage of gaming where something catches my interest and I immediately want to try it.

Video games have been present in my life for as long as I can remember, but I only really started indulging freely in the last few years, so I'm still kind of figuring out my style. I feel really lucky that I get try everything and have it be mostly brand new. It's a rare feeling as an adult.

The Dig

Post by Starfia »

I'm… actually not sure. It was months ago. (And I've play games almost every day since my first NES.) ^ ^

It might be the cinematic sci-fi point-and-click game "The Dig" by Sean Clark. I completely missed it when it came out in 1995, and finally playing it on Twitch last fall was a lovely way to meet a few Internet neighbours who hadn't.

I don’t buy many new games nowadays, but I preordered Spongebob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake for PC, and it arrived a week ago. Seems they’re only making 3600 copies of the PC version (Or at least that’s what the shiny “3320/3600” sticker on my copy implies), just as well I pre-ordered it.

I forgot about BFBB Rehydrated, so I quickly finished that off to prepare for Cosmic Shake.

I also preoredered the upcoming AEW game on PC, I’m hyped for that!

I recently bought a Nintendo Switch after having not owned any consoles for about five years; gaming's still a screen-based hobby, but I much prefer it to scrolling on Twitter. I've kept an eye on the video game industry since I quit playing, so buying the Switch has meant I finally get to play a bunch of the indie games I've been eager to try out!! Donut County and SkateBIRD are two of my current favorites at the moment.

Final Fantasy Theaterhythm! Its been nearly 8 years since the last one, and that was an arcade release so I was really excited to get the new one! The pricing was... off in some ways, but still worth it considering how much I'm playing it to death.
