The Yesterweb Writes the Biggest Number (Forum Game)

Post by amagicmuffin »

I got inspired by OppositeKeith to start another forum game. This one's inspired by a post on the now-defunct xkcd forums.

Try to write a number larger than the last largest number. Feel free to use posts to discuss, there isn't really any "every post must be a large number submission" requirement.

I'll start us off. Quoting the bygone forum thread: 9000. Because we all know any number larger than 9000 is incomprehensibly large.

we seek greater knowledge to make greater decisions when the time for making decisions appears - to be the most capable versions of ourselves in any situation that arises - this is why we study - this is why we learn

Oh we bringing the big guns now?

For all R {
{for any (coded) formula [ψ] and any variable assignment t
(R([ψ],t) ↔
(([ψ] = "xi ∈ xj" ∧ t(xi) ∈ t(xj)) ∨
([ψ] = "xi = xj" ∧ t(xi) = t(xj)) ∨
([ψ] = "(~θ)" ∧ ∼R([θ],t)) ∨
([ψ] = "(θ∧ξ)" ∧ R([θ],t) ∧ R([ξ],t)) ∨
([ψ] = "∃xi (θ)" and, for some an xi-variant t' of t, R([θ],t'))
)} →
R([φ],s)}

Defined as: The smallest number bigger than every finite number m with the following property: there is a formula φ(x1) in the language of first-order set-theory (as presented in the definition of Sat) with less than a googol symbols and x1 as its only free variable such that: (a) there is a variable assignment s assigning m to x1 such that Sat([φ(x1)],s), and (b) for any variable assignment t, if Sat([φ(x1)],t), then t assigns m to x1.

thank you for showing me this. I learned that if we wish to back an apple pie from scratch, we must invent the oodleverse, oodle theory, and specifically first-order oodle theory (FOOT) to extend the language we are working in to beyond the standard language of set theory (which someone else already did, thanks) and then we can let FOOT(n) denote the largest natural number uniquely definable in the language of FOOT in at most n symbols. Apparently any number n should suffice I'm going to play it safe cuz this is weird as hell and put down the number FOOT^10(10^100). edit: apparently upon further research this may be ill-defined because it only works outside of ZFC but the cool thing is that Nobody Cares

Thanks to this answer i was sent down a rabbit hole of Googology and Jesus Christ is it taking a mental toll in me, every number i find is "Ill-defined", and when you look for what it's base is, you find that it's also ill-defined, and so is it's base, and that one's base, and so on and so forth until you end up back at 0, it's like an ever expanding tower of popsicle sticks and the cheapest glue imaginable

But, if we were to in fact not care about definitions...

"Utter Oblivion is allegedly the largest googologism coined by Jonathan Bowers.[1] It is defined as "the largest finite number that can be uniquely defined using no more than an oblivion symbols in some K(oblivion) system in some K2(oblivion) 2-system in some K3(oblivion) 3-system in some K4(oblivion) 4-system in some .........KOblivion(Oblivion) Oblivion-system where the number oblivion can be represented with one symbol (byte)."

Oh god of course MIT had a big number duel. Because of course. I'm losing it lskdfj. this citation in the source was pretty fun to read

Also til adding a .m in the link turns it into the mobile view. Neat.

(Anyways, did yall know that math duels existed? The story on how imaginary numbers (and the cubic equation, I guess) were invented revolves around them and it's crazy :skull: https://yewtu.be/cUzklzVXJwo)
