For me it started with the original Geocities when i was on high school. I always wanted to make a website but didn't know where to start, until I encounter geocities. Immediately i felt in love with it, having a space on the web I can call my own felt so great. At the beginning I didn't have a clue of how to use html so my site was just a mess of stuff I copy pasted from other places, eventually I tried to make sense of it and there it was when I started to learn html in a more serious way.
The years passed, my site gone with the rest of geocities and just a few years ago I started with all this all over again and as Yequari said the main reason for me was also the state of the modern web.

My interest in web design dates far, far back, when I was a small child. I surfed the internet and saw various websites. Some looked like crap, but others had their own unique flair, ones that would stick in my memory for years to come, such as Neopets, Habbo Hotel, a bunch of anime fan sites, animerequiem.com, and whatever sites had a Y2K or pixel art aesthetic. That was when I thought to myself, “hey, maybe I should make a website just as cool as that.”

And that was how it all began…

Family PC sometime in the 90's had a version of MS Frontpage installed. I remember the early thought being, "Wait... I can just make these?!", and then just sandboxing for the next few years. Haven't dabbled with it for ages but it's exciting seeing all the activity in Yesterweb circles-- want to get back to the experimenting.

I started 5 years ago when I enrolled in a software development class. Used to have a hyves profile, and I used to browse the internet a bit when I was younger.

Always been interested in the web.

I made a website to archive a bunch of information and event lists for a Discord server I helped run, it was a fun quarantine activity! Then I realized the format I was using and the focus on 'readability' or whatever (/s) was limiting what I wanted to do (obnoxious amounts of glitter text), so I made my own! I've wanted to make a website since all the way back during the tailend of Geocities, though, but didn't have any of the patience or skill.

one summer i spent a month making a tumblr theme and then a bit later that year someone on there mentioned neocities so i made a website on it. i abandoned it eventually cause i got busy with school, then i made a new one that also ended up neglected because of school, so i revamped it pretty much entirely and its still there now! dont look at the code though its a mess

For me, it all started with Xanga and Myspace. I loved seeing other people's customized pages! Changing my Myspace layout was like cutting and dying my hair - a refreshing change when I needed it most in tough times. It allowed me to express "style" and "fashion" in a way that I wasn't limited by the material world, where those things cost money.

It had a lasting impression on me, and is a big part of why I learned web development as an adult!

aol had a thing that let you make little websites, I think it was called "hometowns"... my first page was about munchkins. I don't think there was much customization you could do

later some internet friends and I had a message board and I would tinker around with making themes for it. around the same time I got my own website... most of the html I learned from html goodies

angelfire for me! i had probably dozens of sites from around 1995-2000, each for various interests or hobbies. in particular, i had a pokemon page that was my pride and joy. i looked at its code recently and wow, what a mess. i was so proud of how i managed to do a whole layout, sidebars and all, in tables... an absolute disaster, haha.

When I was a wee child, my mom saw something in the newspaper for kids wanting to start their first website. So she told me and my friend about it and we tried it out. Played with that for a bit, then switched over to Homestead when it was still free and had an offline client that you could design websites and automatically update from that client when you connected to the internet. It worked the same as Geocities' in-browser editor. Eventually, Homestead pulled their free account, so I moved to a mixture of Geocities, Angelfire, and Angelcities.

I played with having my own website/domain on and off over the years, and recently settled with Neocities.

After playing with Homestead and Geocities, that's when I started to learn HTML myself through HTML for Dummies and some (I think)dolphin-based learn HTML website. I played with rudimentary PHP in high school, and learned CSS in college. I remember wanting to do websites as a job back when I started college, but when I didn't finish college and got into retail computer repair and then IT, I never moved into web design. I also wanted to do programming but I never got good enough, but that's unrelated.

tl;dr My mom, who knew nothing about computers lol

Neopets.

I was 12 or 13, learning to code in order to customize my Neopets shop and pet pages, mostly while sat at my mom's work desk. Then I discovered Geocities and my interest really took off. I think I had... five or six geocities sites over time? Eventually even after Geocities died I got my own domain and was hosted on a friends' server. I've been a stubborn holdout of having a personal site over the years, so I was really stoked to find Neocities eventually!

I attempted to go to college for web design, but after flunking intro to programming like, twice... yeah it didn't really work out. ^^;

ever since i was a kid, i've wanted to make a personal website. my mom said i couldn't until i got older, but by the time i did get older it wasn't something you really did anymore. then i found neocities, and i tried making a website there a few times but failed due to not being patient with html and css.

then i tried out zonelets for neocities, and it was my first taste of having a personal blog on the web that didn't rely on some sort of micro-blogging service. then i switched hosts, and that's when i sat down and gained some patience for writing html and css. i used my resources to my advantage and i slowly learned more and more. once i got the hang of it, i became very enthralled.

this upcoming fall, im taking college courses on html, css, and javascript C:

i'll probably show my age w/ this but i got into it with tumblr. personal sites were pretty phased out by the time i was old enough to comprehend what programming was, so tumblr was my first real experience w/ it. i worked my way up from editing tumblr themes to editing them so much that they were practically my own. i did it on neopets to some extent when i was even younger but not to the level of how i did w/ tumblr. most of my technical knowledge came w/ emulating games, though.

To be fair, while I saw stuff like the Neopages, I haven't really been into web design until recently, with Neocities and the Yesterweb movement. I've always been bad at coding, programming, math, anything that has a rigid logic to it. But I started learning HTML and I personally find it very easy to use. I guess it's because, compared to videogame programming, this time you do not have to come up with ALL the logic within the system yourself.

I recall getting into web design in early 2019, which was around the time I took HTML classes out of pure boredom. Before that, I started my Neocities site in 2017, but I abandoned it for almost two years as I was intimidated by HTML and CSS coding at the time.

Fast forward to that HTML class, it actually helped me in fleshing out my Neocities site a little more since I had basic knowledge with coding now. The thing is, I was never really satisfied with how my site looked, so the theme changed constantly until I settled with the one I liked the most. After I discovered the Yesterweb, I figured that I liked simple but beautiful layouts, but I also wanted to make it a bit more snazzy with some cool web graphics and all. ^^

Oh man I can relate with the intimidation thing... and I still have it to some degree. It's incredibly annoying.
I would love to take an HTML/CSS class too but I want a class that focuses on that and not stupid crappy modern web design.

I guess it was in 2009, with a fanfiction website. They used to allow people to make their own themes with HTML/CSS. Unfortunately I was (still) really bad with coding so I used themes submitted by other users. I also designed a layout for my old blog back in the day. Finding Neocities kinda revamped this side of me, so now I'm learning and building my website.

I started making websites somewhere around 1997 when I was 13 years old, mostly inspired by a girl I met on vacation who's boyfriend had built her a website. I became enamored with the idea and figured out how to do it myself. My website's location bounced around a lot.... I started out with all the free hosting sites of the time, Geocities, Tripod, Angelfire... Then I sorta stabilized on using the provided hosting on my AOL account for awhile.

Then, in the early 2000s, I got "hosted" which was a short lived phenomenon that I *think* was mostly a teen girls who made websites in the early 2000s thing... Teenagers who were able to convince their parents to buy them a domain name and some hosting would turn around and share the resource with other teens who needed hosting for their website.

In 2002, I finally bought my first domain name and bought some hosting and got even more into web development... Taught myself how to work with Wordpress, then later Drupal... ended up having a ten year long career thanks to knowing Drupal, before deciding that I needed to get out of web development professionally for awhile.

For me, I'd say I got into web design by nostalgia of old GeoCities (and Tripod, Angelfire, FortuneCity, etc) sites I discovered when I was younger. I recall wanting a site at one point, but I admit, I didn't really make a site till recently!

A good friend of mine had a fansite on old Geocities. He had mentioned that his site desperately needed a redesign, so me being young and enthusiastic decided I could do it despite no real knowledge of web development. When I showed him my work he said it was 10000% better. That felt pretty good. I've dabbed in webdev on and off ever since.

I remember Frontpage spitting out absolute garbage formatting for your code. I think I spent more time making the code look pretty again than I did trying to fix the hacky table layouts we were saddled with back then.

It's amazing the amount of stories I've seen attributing MySpace for their career in web development. That site really did spawn a whole generation of webdevs.

Dunno, HTML was hot in the late '90s. I remember browsing geocities pages and wondering how they were made. I dunno if I stumbled upon a book or a tutorial online, but I eventually made a small website on geocities maybe angelfire that I told nobody about. Simpler times.

I don't know it's fair to say I'm "into web design", more of a necessary evil for me, I'm into making things though.

I actually got into web design because of an initial fascination with hacking. Because I was like 11 wanting to be a hacker I tried to find resources and just kinda got distracted by all the HTML I had to learn. I didn't actually treat webdev as a potential form of expression until this past year though, and most of my early websites were attempts at making a professional website without anything to sell or any resume to speak of :P

I used to web surf a lot when I was younger (and I still do), but I really didn't know how websites were actually made until I took a computer class in high school, where at one point we were taught how to code, although it was a coding class we really didn't spend that much time on web design, before going into the more technical aspects of computer science. I didn't really think much of web design much again, until I played Hypnospace Outlaw, that game inspiried me to make my own website. Not long after that, I found out neocities, then found the yesterweb discord, and the rest is history....

I'm really glad I found the yesterweb discord/webring (and neocities as a whole), it was you all that really help me kindle the spark of inspiration to make my own website that was started by Hypnospace! I've learned so much from all of you, cant thank you all enough :)

so hard to really remember... i can only really remember getting into it sometime in high school, for web design class, but don't remember if i had any other solid points aside from that. after i took that class i ended up in the warrior cats roleplay forum scene, where i made a lot of BBCode templates for my posts - i guess you could consider that my first motivation to code.

from there, i branched out a bit, making faux-html (bbcode was limiting, but there were addons on various sites that used it that would allow for styling!) and even customizing some forum board layouts. lots of little stuff here and there, and now i have my neocities page, which is where i've learned most of my newer tricks.

i do sort of miss my bbcode template days... but i don't know if roleplay is really right for me anymore! i am not much of a writer. but i did really enjoy making the post templates that i did.

Cameron's World.

I had already lost hope for vintage websites after Geocities went down, but then I randomly stumbled upon that site and soon learned that most of the general GIFs used on webpages in those days were still available on free GIF sites. Soon after I realized that I needed a sort of 'official site' for a project I'm working on, so I decided to try and make one with all the crazy GIFs I could find.

growing up we never had much money, so all tech i could get my hands on would already be pretty old, + living fairly remote there was no working internet infrastructure anyway. computers for me was this weird thing they had on star trek - meaning they were suuuuper cool! so when we finally got hold of an old DOS "laptop" i would go to the library to find old shoddy books about whatever topic, just to DO things on the computer. i started programming qbasic like this, and then when we eventually upgraded to to windows98 also building websites.

my childhood interests were like.... manuals... tables... statistics... (didn't know what any of this was for really, but i liked the shapes.) html was nice for playing i was working for some large company, idk.

(during the early DOS days i recall borrowing books on C programming but not understanding anything... i thought it was referring to the C drive)

When I was young, I really was into making WordPress websites. While it was more limited than a pure HTML website, you coul still make a lot of customizations.

This (alongside other factors) eventually led me to becoming a professional graphic designer wich then led me into "real" web design.

OOH this is a fun one
when i was around 9 or 10, i got Really fixtated on the idea of making a virtual world game a la Club Penguin. however, given that I had no knowledge of coding (or what that even was, really), i just searched up "how to make a virtual world" and got absolutely confused by everything i found. however, i found a site called myfirstworld which was pretty much a place where users could make mini communities and "worlds". it was close enough, so i made my mom let me have an account on there and i got to work on my very amazing virtual world. (however, given that i was a child with absolutely no knowledge of coding or even decent art skills, i had no idea what i was doing)

i did meet a fun community on there that really introduced me to the internet and being able to customize different profiles for each world really sparked my interest in customizing web pages. unfortunately, myfirstworld shut down a few years back .. my absolute favorite world on the platform was catsville, i was catparty102 for the extremely slim chance that anyone was on there :P

once upon a time in middle school I was a "gifted kid"

In hindsight the school's gifted program must have been grant funded because what they did with us was absolutely random year to year.

One of those years, the science and technology nerds all learned web coding and made a school website.
I learned HTML before CSS existed and made a page that reviewed library books every month, and updated useful links on the school library web page. It used tables, and 1px transparent gifs to align everything just so.

One of my classmates got good at it and was eventually hired to make the school's GOOD website, and the high school's website. The rest of us just moved on to other things (I was mostly an art nerd)

Now that I'm the age my parents were then, I'm learning it again, and it's coming with a lot of psychological revisiting of those years lmao.

I started programming when I was 12 (about 3 years ago). At the time I only use Python, and then expand my skills to other programming languages. I really didn't care about creating a website back then, and I really don't care about blogging either.

Then I discovered a website called Bear Blog, which is a blog-hosting website. Then I started digging and created my first (and only) blog ever. At the time, I still don't know about the Old Web yet.

Speed up a few months, and then I discovered The Yesterweb and Sadgrl's website. It got me intrigued. Really intrigued.

I started modifying my website so that it looks like the Old Web as much as I can. Using weird custom fonts, splat a huge rainbow strip on the main page just because I can, adding cool background gradient stuff, etc. It was so much and so unmaintainable to the point when the link to the CSS style dies, it resulted on the website looking unreadable, and I have to revert to a simpler (although less personal and old-web-y) style (which is what you should be seeing now).

Thinking about it, I hate that now my website cannot look like an Old Web website now. I just so god-damn love my old website, even if it is an abomination of design, it's still my website and I loved it.

And that's pretty much it for me, I am now 14, just about a few months from 15. I have not been programming for quite some time, to focus more on writing and blogging. However, I still keep me a burning love for the Yesterweb.

---

Btw, you can check out an archived version of my blog before the CSS style breaks, here is what it looks like when it breaks, or check my blog now if you want to compare the two.

I agree, your previous website was really cool tsukiii, I don't think it deserve the title of abomination of design! But I also like the simplicity of the current one; both are valid in my eyes.
You've been really prolific with your blog btw, that's really impressive. And I really liked some of them, keep going! You got a new RSS subscriber

so i was never really exposed to much "old web" stuff as a kid because i didn't really learn how to use the internet until i was old enough for those sites to no longer be mainstream ;~; i had always had an interest in making websites i guess, but the compsci classes in high school that covered it gave me like a very basic understanding of html and in-line css so it wasn't particularly fun for me. honestly the biggest hurdle, though, was not having anywhere to host the website and not knowing where to start with it.

one day i saw cinni was streaming some art stuff (i found out through her instagram lmao), and the people in the stream were other yesterweb members! so they ended up talking abt the yesterweb and cinni streamed her site! (shoutout to tonicfunk and auzziejay, there was another person there who i cant remember the name of ;~; but it started with a b and they had a really cute pastel website)

anyway i thought it was super cool and was like "oh wow lots of people have cool websites so i can totally make one too" so i joined the discord, made a neocities account, and i think i made my home page in one day - i basically learned a shitload of html and css very poorly in one sitting (dont look at my code LMAO). but in making more pages for my interests, i have gotten a lot better at it (i think at least).

i'm honestly pretty interested in going into webdev professionally since i'm a compsci undergrad who will be finishing up school soon, but my uni doesn't really offer much in the way of webdev. i know corporate webdev is a hellscape but i'm trying to go into something i'm actually capable of doing compared to other programming stuff that is just not enjoyable for me in the slightest. idk i gotta look into my options (thumbs up emoji)

SORRY this is super long winded lmao
tl;dr i love making website <3

When it was time to choose which program to go to (we have six years of obligatory school, then three optional which most of us attend, and the three last ones are geared towards something - nursing, vehicles, media, arts and so on) I heard the media program was mostly sitting around a computer playing flash games. So I went with that. Then I realized it was incredibly fun and rewarding to build websites and became the best student in the class. After the three years I took another two in the same direction, tried to get work but failed and then went to another three years of the same kind of studies. Even got a degree and everything! *coolguy_85*

Going to be honest this is embarrassing to answer.

But deviantArt (a skinning site from 2000s that then turned into an art site.) in 2020 was going to permanently change their site's layout to a buggy, un-intuitive, new layout called "eclipse" a layout they had in beta since 2018. It was buggy then, and sadly is still buggy when they made it the current layout. It sucked ass, still sucks major ass, and I was so mad at this that out of spite I made a neocities account and started to learn code.

toyhou.se (a character storage site that lets you code inline html and css for customization purposes) also helped a bit during since I started using my account in late 2020 to now. In turn it kinda helped my understanding of html and css a bit. (even though I was limited to inline css.)
There's more stuff to but it's hard to articulate at the moment. So I'll probably add it to this post later if I can.

Also tumblr! I really wanted to make tumblr themes since a lot of them didn't fit me, so that also motivated me to learn web design to. I might go back into that. 🤔

Personally looking back at my original page back in 2020 and comparing it to code made in late 2022 & early 2023. I feel that there's a significant improvement and I'm proud of that.

Oddly thanks to that spite I found a new hobby that I genuinely love!
Oh look it's some turtles with my butto- HEY WAIT GET BACK HERE!

I originally got interested in it making personal sites on webs.com (and later wix) - I stumbled across webs.com originally by way of an rp forum and then decided to make my own for things I liked (mainly creepypasta) . I didn't get into doing actual HTML though until later with Tumblr - where I learned HTML + CSS through customizing/adding my own stuff to page themes for my characters :3 From there I just learned more until I could actually write pages on my own. Will say though - because of that I didn't realize CSS could be in its own file until around the time I joined neocities! xP

simply boredom. ive had websites and forums since i was like 11-12 lol. back in the day you used to have so many generators and website makers. that would help you make your own.

In 2001, I joined Neopets. And I discovered you could write webpages for your pets. That's what taught me about HTML.

In 2003, I made my first attempt at my very own website. It is better left forgotten.

I kinda stopped dealing with websites for a long time after that. Then in 2022, I learned about Neocities and the Small Web and was like, "you know what? This is what I've been missing on the Internet for a long time." And I made myself a website.
