Let's talk about movies

Post by Alice Smith »

Movies serve as a means of communication, providing a platform for filmmakers to express their thoughts, opinions, and ideas to a large audience. Through the use of visual and auditory storytelling, movies can convey complex and abstract concepts in a manner that is both accessible and engaging. This is particularly true in the realm of political and social commentary, where movies can serve as a powerful tool for raising awareness and sparking important discussions on important topics. They play an important role in our personal lives as a form of entertainment and escapism, providing a temporary escape from the stress and demands of everyday life, allowing us to immerse ourselves in a different world and experience new emotions and perspectives. Whether it be through laughter, tears, or heart-pumping action, movies have the ability to transport us to another place and time, and to touch us on a deep emotional level. By telling stories that are based on real events or historical periods, movies can provide insight into different cultures, customs, and traditions; movies can serve as a means of exploring complex scientific, technological, or philosophical concepts in a way that is both engaging and entertaining.

So, what are your favorite movies? What do you think makes a great movie? Do you have any movie recommendations? What's the last movie you watched? What do you think about it?

In the thread about books, Lain mentioned Annihilation the movie vs the original, so I want to talk about it some more here :0
I think the movie is good if you think of it as its own thing. It's very, very far from the source material. I was rather annoyed that they cast white people for the Biologist and the Psychologist, but on top of not being physically described until the sequel book (which hadn't been written at the time of filming), the movie canon feels detached from the book canon. I don't even want to call this is a "name-only" adaptation, because the original characters have no names. When the protag introduces herself as Lena I was flabbergasted because I spent the whole book thinking of her as "biologist".
Anyway, I watched it for the first time a few months ago, and then after beating Pokemon Scarlet I made my gamer siblings watch it with me so we could compare Area X to Area 0. It was fun pointing to the screen and going "do you see what I was talking about?"

I absolutely love movies!! If I had to tell you my top 5 that would be a hard question, but if u pointed a gun to my head and told me to recommend only 1 movie like my life depended on it it would be Love Exposure (2008) by Sion Sono.

No films come close to the dazzlingly eccentric, original and pure punk energy of this film. It was shot in 2 months, cut from 6 hours down to 4, and features a soundtrack of songs that were on the directors flip phone at time of recording. It is a madcap adventure that follows the life of a young catholic in japan whose grieving priest father forces him to confess his sins everyday, resulting in an insane journey into upskirt photography, drag and cults. Its themes range from childhood abuse, religion, love, cults, industrial pornography, fetish and perversion, and its frenetic pace makes the 4 hour runtime of the film feel like 1. Truly a god tier film and I have never seen anything quite like it since (the title card coming in at just under an hour also makes me cum)

your description sounded incredible. already intrigued, I watched the trailer, and was really vibing with it, and then they swung right into beethoven's symphony no. 7 and I slammed it on my watchlist immediately. I don't know if/when I'll have four hours available and the attention span to go with it, but it's definitely on my radar now!

I don't consider myself A Cinephile by any means, but I spend a good deal of time watching films. My favorite director of all time is easily Cronenberg, I love Ferrara and Greenaway a lot lately, and I'm always down for a Spike Lee Joint.
