Privacy Boost thread

Post by Neonriser »

Some people say that there is no such thing as privacy anymore in this digital age, but I personally feel it doesn't mean we should continue using social media and Google Chrome like the average person. I believe there is no need to be pessimistic, so I decided to compile a list of things that I have done to improve my privacy:

- Left Facebook (no one really uses it anymore)
- Used Startpage as the default search engine
- Installed and used Firefox and Vivaldii
- Added the Startpage Privacy Protection plugin
- Used Mastodon and Neocites as an alternative to social media

If there are any methods to improving privacy, feel free to add them here!

This is the video that inspired this post:

List of things I've done:
  • Started using Librewolf and Ungoogled Chromium as my main browsers. Also have Netsurf and Otter on standby just in case.
  • Started using Mojeek as my main search engine
  • Left all social media, only use Twitter for game dev promotion. Have convinced my family to email or text me instead.
  • Have been slowly easing myself off of Discord, have been using forums primarily to socialise online
  • Have started to record songs I like that are only available on Youtube and Spotify on cassette and did the same for videos onto VHS.
  • Started using MullvadVPN

FYI startpage/ixquick got co-opted pretty quick to get sucked into an adtech company or something like that.

duckduckgo may have issues as well. Brave search was recommended to me, but I don't like the UI and would like an alternative.

Yeah, there was another thread that talked about how DDG actually has deals with Microsoft and I think Google.

Brave is also very suspicious imo. They appear to target more towards the "free speech" crowd than people like us (Brave was even founded by someone who got fired from Mozilla for being a homophobe), and openly support crypto, which as we know is a realm full of scams.

Internet Spyware Watchdog ranks their browser as "high", so I can't imagine their search engine is any better.

It sucks that the only search engines that don't use telemetry don't perform very well when it comes to finding help for an issue you're having. Even then, I'm not sure if they're being honest about being private, because the money they use to pay for the servers to host their services has to come from somewhere, and they don't specify where...

We use Librewolf and Ungoogled Chromium as well.
For seach we use a self-hosted SearXNG which runs on our server protected by EU privacy laws.
We should use a VPN too but have been lazy about it.
Social media we stopped using entirely except discord and twitch.
Youtube is used exclusively via invidious and a feed reader. We don't open the page but instead watch videos via mpv using yt-dlp.
Any proprietary software on my PC besides drivers/firmware are in a sandbox.
We never used any streaming services so nothing changed on that.
Our phone is degoogled but we'll switch to either a Pinephone or flip phone when this one doesn't work anymore.

I've been working on locking down everything for a few years now, and I feel I've made quite a bit of progress.
  • Left Facebook/Reddit completely
  • Switched to Kagi/DDG for search
  • Migrated email from Gmail to Protonmail
  • No longer using Google apps/services
  • Changed from Android to IOS
  • Stopped ordering anything from Amazon that I can get locally
  • I've always preferred Firefox over Chrome, but I've beefed up my security with a combination of uBlock/Decentraleyes/Privacy Badger/NoScript
Next on my list is to set up a Pihole to give my non-computer devices a bit of coverage. Sadly, actually getting my hands on a Pi4 has proven to be quite a task.

I’ve done a few things…

- Created a threat model to help navigate complicated scenarios. Privacy vs convenience and how much I’m willing to sacrifice.
- Migrated most email/domains from Gsuite.
- Stopped using Google based products for alternatives.
- Use Firefox multi account containers for when I do have to browse particular silos.
- Use a unique email and password for every website/service that I have to create an account for. Where identification doesn’t matter, use salted/fake details.
- Seperate cellphone with seperate number for phone verification.

Still a lot to do. Like anything, a careful balancing act.

I've taken a few steps, and plan on doing more in the future
  • Left twitter and reddit for good
  • Switched from Vivaldi to Firefox
  • Planning on switching from Windows 10 to ReviOS (wich is basically windows but without the bloat)
  • Switched from Gmail to fedora.mail (for online social spaces like this one at least)
There are still stuff out of my control related to piracy (i mean i'm not gonna convince my family and friends to start using Signal or Retroshare or whatever), but i'm quite happy with how i'm going with this

I got one use Protonmail for Email, Note you can use Tutanota and start mail if you think Protonmail is not for you.

Use Peertube, Odysee, Twitch, Dailymotion as alternatives to Youtube is another one
Use Wiby.me if you hate where the Google search algorithm is going. Wiby.me is more friendly toward Neocities pages. Mojeek, and duckduckgo for mainstream search pages.

https://multiverse.plus/

Check out this one this site is not well known as the big social media companies and its not outright collecting data but its meant for a crowd that wants a retro 2000's look.

Protonmail is good, but they have given data they have on people to authorities when asked, several times.

Twitch is owned by Amazon, so is just as bad as Youtube if not worse, and Dailymotion is owned by a big media corporation, so I wouldn’t trust that either.

I'm also using LibreWolf! That and a VPN subscription is my main efforts towards more privacy.

I tried using secMail.pro (it's on the tor network) but it was just too slow and troublesome to use. :)

Good points here it went outside the Privacy tools io lines.

Surprisingly, I managed to get a whole friend-group to switch to signal. I'm glad I don't have to rely on discord anymore, although I still use it from time to time. It's really difficult to switch if the people around you don't care.

I’ve sort of done this, too. I’ve convinced everyone to email or text me instead of using social media to contact me. (Though the fact I can’t log into Facebook probably helps)

Though they probably aren’t using privacy friendly clients for either, but it’s a start, right?

Apparently Startmail has been hyped up as the next protonmail.

https://skiff.com/pricing

Skiff is attempting to go after the Google and Microsoft office suites for attempting to be more privacy friendly than the prior two. However this is all hype until proven otherwise.

How this gets explained is yet to be verified here.
