my monitor hurts my eyes :(

Post by Yukari »

I’m typing this on my smartphone  I use Windows 10 and an external monitor (a Gigabyte M27Q-P to be specific). I have tried adjusting the brightness, the color temperature, using f.lux, but I can’t stare at it for more than a few minutes without getting a headache.

It wasn’t always like this, so maybe some settings got changed without me noticing… anyway, how do you guys deal with eyestrain from electronics in general? I need your expertise!! I’ve started borrowing other people’s laptops when I need to spend a long time in front of a screen and I cannot keep living like this. It’s only my PC in particular that gives me these migraines.

for me, it's a combination of screen size, temperature, contrast, brightness.

Smaller screens are better, 15-17" seems to be best. Recently I started using a 24" monitor and it's just too big! (can't imagine what 27" would be like...)
Warm temperature and making it contrasty during the day and not so much at night (when required) seems to really help too. Same pattern for brightness.

I find that monitor resolution and refresh rate are also important. I have a 27" monitor with 1440p resolution and 120hz refresh rate, it's noticeably easier on my eyes than my others.

Unfortunately, my only solution has been to use less electronics. (Or fortunately, depending on how I'm feeling that day.) Interestingly, the last two times I got a new pc monitor, they gave me headaches/nausea(?) that faded as I. just. Ignored it and kept using it for some length of time? But apparently the reverse happened for you so I'd feel bad telling you to just stare at it more until it re-resolves itself :/

Hope you find a working solution! <3

It very well could be the monitor since the problem is real and can happen to anyone (I remember feeling better about reading on my monitor after switching to a 27" 144hz one) but I also want to ask you, how far away from your screen are you sitting? Do you get the same kind of eyestrain when reading something analog from that distance? It could be that you need glasses. :) That was the case for me, I was just fine with reading everything, but reading the subtitles on our TV was giving me such a headache all the time. I suspected electronic monitor fatigue for the longest time before realizing I just needed glasses.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I think Starfighter is right and this is an eyesight issue, not an electronic issue :o I have also gotten migraines while reading books but I didn’t think much of it. Need to get my eyes checked sometime hehe
