I'm surprised there wasn't a thread for this already...

Anyways, I've been customizing my blogs over the past couple of days, and I think they all turned out alright! Even if I'm just using someone else's free theme for them, it's been good coding practice for me to modify these themes to my liking, I think.

For example, with the character masterlist and story pages on my OC blog, this is the theme I was using:


And here's how my respective pages look:



It's nothing too technically impressive, but I'm happy with how they turned out. Ever since I've been on my customization binge, I've been vaguely toying with the idea of making my own themes for the website as well, it might be good web development practice, since structural code isn't my strong suit. I consider myself more of a graphic web designer than anything.

Anyways, here's my OC blog. I have a dozen other side blogs, but this is the one I feel the most comfortable sharing online at the moment. I like the theme for my main blog way more aesthetics and layout-wise, but the URL is under another internet pseudonym I use that I would prefer to not reveal so willy-nilly.

I've had a tumblr for a long time but I've never really modified it.
So much of tumblr happens from the dashboard that it never got through my CBA wall.

Oh, I see your blog theme around a lot! It's a solid one, so I can see why people use it. Personally, I think it's better than the super minimalist themes a lot of theme creators make these days, and it's leagues better than the dated, maximalist themes from the mid-10s I often see in a theme collector blog's catalogue.
It's totally understandable that you haven't customized your blog; practically no one uses Tumblr these days, and because of what you said about everything happening from the dashboard.

I like the way you've taken an off-the-shelf template and really made it fit your needs/aesthetic.

I'd really like to congratulate you on using brown earth tones in an effective way. I've struggled for most of my adult life with capturing that sort of warm friendliness you've managed here. Instead I usually end up with something, well, poopy.

Then I end up making the thing blue or purple-on-black.

Thank you! I know a lot of me decorating webpages consists of me eyeballing it for good contrasts between colors and having a vague understanding of color theory, but I also take a lot of inspiration from all of the browns and warm colors from mid-century modern wallpaper.

I think to help avoid that poopy color, try to not make the browns lean so hard towards the yellow tint of the warm colors of spectrum? I've noticed that (often muted) reds and oranges make for better ones.

Purple on black is a really good color scheme, by the way.

Also I just found out my request to use Javascript on my blog pages was approved - Tumblr took away this feature around May 2022 for some reason, and you have to send in a request to staff to have that enabled - so now I can spend some more time on the blog making a character filter system like there was on my old OC blog.

i've actually been using a theme someone else made for years at this point. it's simple and accomplishes what i want it to!
