Genders are like OSes

Post by atKingMSPFA »

Originally from a status.cafe post, thought this would make a nice forum topic too.

-There are much more than just Windows and Mac, even if most people don't venture from them
-Each OS has specialised pros and cons, and some make weird exaggerated claims about them (e.g. Mac is virus-proof, Mac is restrictive, Linux is for hackers)
-Most of them have stereotypes for their userbase
-The average consumer has never heard of OpenBSD, but that doesn't mean you should chastise them for it

Any others?

Sometimes they update and break everything, but you can always try to switch to another.

I'll let the imagination translate this into gender.

You're likely to use the one your parents got you used to, but sometimes you realize you'd really like using another one and you switch

Sometimes you just want to stick to the tried-and-true, but maybe you're not getting along with your current choice. No worries, just try something else out!

both are very complicated to get into when first learning about them but still possible to get used to it backed up by years of development and a strong community for it that similarly see themselves belonging in the norm of society even if it means things turning ugly.

Computers run on binary code but people don't so we... need... OSes? I don't even know where I'm going with this, it's late.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Gender, is in fact, GNU/Gender, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Gender. Gender is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Gender, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Gender, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Gender is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Gender is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Gender added, or GNU/Gender. All the so-called Gender distributions are really distributions of GNU/Gender!
