What happened to the webring?
The members list is empty and the surf page/widgets don't work... is this temporary or is the webring down for good?

Re: What happened to the webring?
The webring is back up! My VPS changed its IP and I missed the email telling me this. It took down a few other websites too... Oops! All is good now, though.

Re: What happened to the webring?
changing IPs willy-nilly is a bad practice, i guess u should maybe switch providers. even with an email, it could be massive inconvenience for you, if you managed multiple VPSes linked together. one IP change would take the whole system down

Re: What happened to the webring?
I had no idea it was such a big deal
I'm using Hosteons as a provider now, and I like them because I have a VPS with 2GB RAM (which seems to be on the higher end) and it only costs me $40 a year to keep up. If anyone knows of anything comparable to that, lemme know! I'd be open to seeing what else is out there, but it's the price that really won me over

Re: What happened to the webring?
some of the providers i've used in the past
https://www.vpsag.com/
https://www.vultr.com/
https://www.ovhcloud.com/
there are a few more that i forgot the name of. currently i'm at oracle's free tier. their free ARM machines are godly, if you're ethically okay with shit they did in the IT industry and their massive data collection machine in some of their products.
but nah, u should probably keep what you have now, 40 a year is pretty good. and those 2GB of ram could probably easily handle 300K people visiting at the same time

Re: What happened to the webring?
I use Linode, which is half the price and double the RAM. similar to a lot of the other VPS providers like the ones posted above, but yeah please switch off of a provider that's going to break your site with no notice.Sadness wrote: ↑Sat Mar 04, 2023 2:12 am I had no idea it was such a big deal

Linode might be cheaper than Vultr and DigitalOcean at the moment, but they are going up in price next month:

Re: What happened to the webring?
Ty for the suggestions, I have used Vultr before and I knew about OVH but I didn't know about VPSAG. I'll keep these bookmarked!rina wrote: ↑Sat Mar 04, 2023 7:55 pm some of the providers i've used in the past

Oof haha I pay $40 a year, $20/month seems kind of steep, but thank you anyway!!glacial_pace wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 10:10 pmI use Linode, which is half the price and double the RAM. similar to a lot of the other VPS providers like the ones posted above, but yeah please switch off of a provider that's going to break your site with no notice.Sadness wrote: ↑Sat Mar 04, 2023 2:12 am I had no idea it was such a big deal

Re: What happened to the webring?
Damn that's really good! I'd be tempted to get a VPS for that price, but I have no idea what I'd even do with it.Sadness wrote: ↑Sat Mar 04, 2023 2:12 am I'm using Hosteons as a provider now, and I like them because I have a VPS with 2GB RAM (which seems to be on the higher end) and it only costs me $40 a year to keep up. Like I love the idea of paying for a space that is entirely your own to do what you want with, but at the same time, Neocities does everything I need it to right now.
Maybe make it a space to host videos, or perhaps an Owncast instance to stream game development or whatever?

Re: What happened to the webring?
The one thing i do with mine except webhosting is a nextcloud instance. It's been sooo good to just leave dropbox and googledrive behind and keep my things at home - well strike that, in a datacenter in germany. But still! At this point i have a laptop per room density of 1.2, and syncing things between them with a shared folder is very smooth this way. Plus i can access it on my phone and on the web bla bla bla it's the same as dropbox but you host it yourself. I don't trust any of these companies, plus it's nice to be able to just throw a 3 GB mkv at it and not bat an eye.Cobra! wrote: ↑Sat Mar 11, 2023 9:05 pm [snip]

((To be honest it's a little tricky to setup and, let's say, "annoying" to move around - i've ran it of a raspberry and then a thinkpad and then a new harddrive in that same thinkpad and now on this VPS, and i'ts been a whole thing to move it between these without messing up all the connected clients or user accounts or data etc.))

Re: What happened to the webring?
Well, it’s an idea, but I use Filen for hosting, and pay for 5TB of storage, and I have an account with Disroot, which has it’s own Nextcloud instance. So not much point in me using a 3rd cloud service.sixeyes wrote: ↑Sun Mar 12, 2023 12:22 pm The one thing i do with mine except webhosting is a nextcloud instance.
