Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with being nostalgic, or liking the aesthetics of old websites, but I'm glad that people are also thinking/talking about the deeper aspects of what made the old web so appealing in the first place, and how we can harbor those positive traits on our now hypercapitalized internet. I read through Yesterwebs manifesto page, and it really resonated with me. I feel like having a community like this with proper goals is a very good idea. (Sorry for making this part so long, lol)

I love the missions and philosophies here, promotion of creativity and small web and the rejection of social media corporations, marketing and centralization, and also how mature and level-headed the community seems to be. I've been on the internet since around 2003 and have grown in different ways with it, but I'm unhappy with what it's become. Being an artist online is stressful now, as I hate what social media does to my mind but have struggled a lot with finding a balance between "finding an audience" and "keeping my sanity." I'm highly sensitive and introverted, and the massiveness and loudness of the modern internet has really worn me down. I want to make my online world smaller. I've discovered in the past few months that this is something I'm surprisingly passionate about, so I've even overcome my lurker habits to join the community! (my Neocities page is a HUGE WIP)

I'm just old enough to remember the way fanfiction and fanwork culture used to function - back when it was largely hosted on independently hosted and operated archives or webrings, and through the end of the LJ days. there's been a definite shift in the way that fanwork producing and sharing works, in that it no longer feels like a collaborative community, but instead a commodity to market for clout and attention. the speed that people in fandom expect material to be produced with is absurd, and there isn't a culture of sharing and discussing anymore. a return to slower methods of communication and independently hosted content feels much more conducive to a warmer, more collaborative fanwork community. also, I miss the basic webdesign knowledge I gained using myspace when I was in junior high, and the computer literacy I used to have, and really want to relearn ... all of that.
What's your favorite thing to do online? during the intial covid lockdowns I ran a very small fanfiction writing community on discord for a niche tv show, and about a dozen of us are still really good friends to this day.

I was into tumblr a decade ago and would talk to people through DMs, where we’d talk in paragraphs about what we’d reblog/life. We moved on to Twitter and the character limit changed how we interacted; I’d post quick thoughts expecting attention and realized… this sucks! I quit social media for 2 years and joined Mastodon recently to see if it would change anything, but just not a fan of the quick-thought/“brand” format most social media is. I wanna work on an (abandoned) Neocities site, be resourceful/intentional instead of being so mindless with what I post, and move back to forums for social media.
What’s your favorite thing to do online?: Learning stuff! If you have a library nearby and can get a card (sometimes you can get just an ecard too) they might offer online resources like digital books, online classes, documentaries… love it!
