Static Site Generators

Post by Obspogon »

Those are basically what they sound like. Make some files, run a command, and get a folder that's an entire site. More info here.

I've just updated my site to use Eleventy.

They make a website so much easier to manage. Thoughts?

My website is statically generated with (a minor tweak of) this Python script, which is great for what I need: you design the layout and the actual articles / pages separately

When I started my Neocities account a few weeks ago, I started just doing plain HTML like I would have back in the olden days.... that lasted all of about two days before I remembered what a tedious pain in the butt trying to manage an entire website with only HTML was like.... so that inspired me to look into what's out there for SSGs.

I ended up using Jekyll for mine.

Overall, I liked the experience of building out the bones of my website with it, and I thought it made things a lot more manageable on the creation end. If I want to manage my navigation, change how my website looks, etc... it provides good tools for that without having to edit every single file in my website manually.

I've been looking for something like this for ages. I want to write an SSG, but I'm a shoddy programmer. This is perfect and give me the chance to extend it.

Cheers!

I've been using Zola to generate a majority of my pages. The templating syntax was a little weird to get the hang of at first, but I managed to make a site with the structure I wanted to use without being forced into constraints or having to use weird workarounds like other SSGs.

On this topic, I was looking into static site solution to speed up my load time, but most of them seemed inconvenient to me; I didn't wanted to learn a template language, new editors or programs which would just make my process more complicated.

But I found an alternative solution: since I already knew PHP, I decided to simply use this, and then use wget (with wsl since I'm on Windows atm) to generate a static version of it.
I created a batch script with just this line in a separate folder:

Code: Select all

wsl wget -r -k "http://localhost"
I simply need to double click and it compile my code into a static version I can upload.

I used php but this technically would work with any languages you can imagine (as long as making a static version make sens)

Hopefully it's interesting for some of you!

Don't have much experience with them yet, but after working on my neocities and portfolio sites on and off for a few weeks, I'll definitely be looking more into one (probably hugo). Plus, I think there's a good case for them if personal websites are every going to have a resurgence. Not everyone who may want a site for themselves is going to be interested in programming or web development, and the average person probably doesn't have the time or desire the learn all the ins and outs of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. From what I can tell, site generators seem like a good middle ground between leaving the development of the site all to some outside service and building it entirely from scratch with the most bare bones tools.

There is a general misconception that the usage of static site generators means that you aren't handcrafting your website. Every static site generator I have used or looked into still requires you to craft your own HTML, CSS and Javascript.

The use case of the static site generator is that you create templates using your handcrafted HTML, CSS etc., that will generate your website for you so that you don't have to copy/paste common elements into each new page that you create.

I've been using them for several years and value the automation and time spent. Upfront time is spent developing your HTML, CSS, and page templates, but once that's done, you have much more time to focus on writing and creating. Good luck.
